Validation of New Permeation Cell Design and Test Procedure for the Measurement of Liquids and Gases through Protective Clothing Materials

People involved in the handling, transportation and production of toxic industrial
chemicals (TICs) can be exposed to various compounds capable of causing harmful
effects upon contact with the human body.
The standard test method (ASTM F739-07)
measures the permeation of challenge chemicals (liquid or gases) through protective
clothing materials. A new permeation cell design will allow the validation of an
alternative test procedure for measuring cumulative permeation mass as compared to
Preliminary experimental data shows that the measurement of cumulative permeation values provides a basis for representing permeation chemical in a dose-like measurement and allows a better comparison with proposed toxicological exposure limits.
